Before I gave my keynote, John Bates, a recruiting and career management veteran, explained the general concept of personal branding and how it related to building a business through referrals. Also, he noted the significance of taking a niche and explaining how you must stand for something. John brands himself as the Job-Guy, which means he is the go-to person for helping people with their job search and career path. He explained how his cartoon character reflected his brand and that of the people he served (he nailed it). Mike Langford, who also has his own cartoon character on Facebook (if he listened to my presentation, which he did, he set an alert for his name and will be reading this). How to adjust to university life after the Christmas holiday - Debut This post was written by an external contributor. George Cook on how you shake off Christmas and adjust to university life all over again. The Christmas break is now over and many of us are going back to university with some added weight after eating one too many chocolates and pigs in blankets- although, you can never have too many pigs in blankets. And while we were home, it felt like we weren’t there at all as Christmas came and went in the blink of an eye. Is this the Arctic? Going back to university is often hard for many at any time, but after Christmas with the doom and dread of January deadlines looming, it can be extremely tricky. From the warmth and comfort of our own homes, we are about to enter into a familiar, but much colder, house. One where it seems endlessly dirty and where everything goes missing or gets broken (I’ve broken about 8 pieces of kitchenware this year already). Do I really have to cook again? This familiar environment is one where you have to cook for yourself again in a kitchen that Kim and Aggie would find utterly repulsive, and let’s face it, no one wants to get on the wrong of Kim.      . Cooking at home is great because the kitchen appears like a paradise fit for royalty and it even appears there’s more than 5 ingredients in the cupboard. And some of you might even be fortunate enough to have meals cooked for you or have even eaten out with your friends a few times. Instead you’ll now be thinking ‘oh, I wonder what exciting thing I’ve got for dinner again…yes, that’s it, it’s pasta bake again isn’t it’, and trying to spice it up by using a different sauce or adding a little bit of meat or Quorn. And if you can’t be bothered to even cook a pasta bake, you’ll be living off cereal, sausages, toast and a good old-fashioned meal deal (co-op ones are my favourite-controversial, I know). Alarm clocks at the ready! Whilst we were also off for Christmas, there were no 9ams. Unless you’re very weird like me and like to wake up early in the morning, it will be hard to get used to this again. Often, you’ll arrive to your 9am in body only with your mind probably thinking about what you’re going to have for lunch and if its too early for a pint. To be fully prepared for your 9ams, go to bed early and never turn up after going out the night before. Cats, dogs…and frogs? Another big problem for many is the prospect of leaving their four-legged friends. For me, this is not a problem, not because I don’t have a pet, but because the pet I do have hates me (world’s smallest violin). Bobby, the resident cat in my household, treats me like an imposter and uses me only for food, but I’m not bitter about this at all. Others are fortunate enough to be loved and adored by their pet, and leaving them can be very hard. You’ll go from seeing them all day to not seeing them for weeks on end, and in dog and cat years that’s a very long time! Although, some of you may be lucky enough to have adopted some four-legged ‘friends’ in your house at university… It can be difficult… Adjusting back to all of this will be hard. Whilst I’ve made this very light-hearted, it’s important to acknowledge that some people really struggle with moving back to university for a number of different reasons. Keep an eye on how your friends are doing and whether they seem to be adjusting back well. Be a busy bee Its good to keep busy so you aren’t thinking too much about what everyone is doing back home if you feel like you’re missing out. For me, I spend my free time writing about and reading the news, I’m quite nerdy like that. You don’t have to be as boring as me, you just need to find something to do to help keep you busy and I find that helps me adjust back to university life better. From Me To Us Whats Stopping Teamwork When the business lingo is filled with one-liners that promote the importance of teams, from ‘there’s no I in the team’ to ‘together we can do so much’, it’s fair to say that companies are not given any chance to forget about their teams. Nevertheless, just because you insist on calling your employees a team doesn’t mean that they feel and behave like a team at all. When the full-length teamwork quote that you’ve put on the office wall doesn’t make it happen, then it’s time to review your team strategy. Indeed, contrary to the common misconception, the most common obstacle not teamwork isn’t the team itself. It’s the way the company fails to make it happen. From your internal processes in place to the way you manage your employees, you could inadvertently be counterproductive. Are you the one stopping teamwork in your company? Here’s how to find out. Is it even part of your process? Ultimately, if you haven’t established collaborative habits in the workplace, it’s unfair to blame your employees for failing to work together as a team. Using open communication tools to improve the dynamics of your teams cross-company can help people from different department to exchange knowledge easily and smoothly. Tools such as Slack or Trello, for instance, create a sharing platform for everyone. It’s a behavior that you need to support by showing the example first; namely, you need to remain approachable and encourage an open atmosphere so that ideas can circulate without any hierarchic barrier. As a manager, your role is to offer transparency and guidance in this instance. Ultimately, if company-related information can’t travel from you to the team, you can’t expect the team to favorize collaborative processes. Do people know and trust each? At the core of a team, there’s the ability for employees to trust each other. Transparency and fair treatment from all managers can help to create an atmosphere where people are not competing against each other but working together. But, you’ll find that for newly established teams, team building activities can make a great deal of difference in bringing everyone together. Through games, such as by creating multiple teams to compete in a playful environment you can help people to develop their individual bonds and trust. Additionally, there’s always a motivation with these games. Namely, there’s the prospect of winning the awards for the best team building effort. Favorites are racing games and treasure hunts. Do you praise the team? Giving praise is important when your employees perform positively. Praising is your way of recognizing efforts, and it’s not the kind of thing you can substitute with paychecks. Nevertheless, when praising teams, it’s essential that you consider the while team efforts instead of one individual. Success is never the result of one single person’s work. Failing to identify this basic truth in your praises can lead to demotivation and lack of team consensus. Additionally, you’re at risk of creating conflicts within the team and pushing people against each other for the sake of recognition. Ultimately, the question is whether you’re a team-aware manager. It’s your role to help the team to come together and perform. So, make sure to become the catalyst for the team and not the element of disruption.

Career Advice Should you lie to your boss One of my career coaching clients, Robert, recently was wondering if he should tell his boss how unhappy he was at work. Robert had not been there very long but he was miserable, and pretty much ready to quit. Should you lie to your boss about whether youre happy at work? Almost all of my clients deal with this question.  I will give you the same advice that I gave James. Being up front about your discontent at your job really depends on your situation. Obviously this is a touchy subject that you want to be careful with and err on the side of caution. If you share any information at all, share less than more.  You need to pay your bills, remain financially stable, and take care of yourself even if youre planning to leave.  If you share any details with your supervisor it should depend on the relationship you have with them, how you think they will take the news, and if any changes could be made. The answer is no, dont lie to your boss. You still have to be sure to cover yourself just in case. Only share what you think is necessary about how you feel regarding your work. Especially if youre thinking they can, or will make changes that could make you happier. Ive had clients where that is the case so I know its possible. I have also had clients where the situation was far from possible. They chose to work hard, stay under the radar and plan their departure as soon as they could. Evaluate your own situation: What are your long term goals? What do you want to achieve by letting your boss know youre unhappy? How will it go over?
